United Arab Emirates - Patent Law Amendments

The patent law of the United Arab Emirates has been amended. Major changes include the following:

1. The term of patents will now be twenty years from the filing date of the application.

2. Annual fees payable on the anniversary of the filing date will be payable to keep applications and patents in force.

3. Patent protection for medicinal or pharmaceutical patents will commence in 2005.

4. Provision is made for revocation of a patent for failure to use the invention within three years.
