Korea (South) - Amendment to Copyright Law

The South Korean copyright law was amended with effect from July 1, 2003. Major changes include those set out below.

1. Provision is made for a five-year period of protection for a database creator who has made considerable investments in producing, renewing, testing or supplementing a database even though the creativity involved in production of the database does not rise to the level required to secure full copyright protection.

2. It is made a criminal offense, subject to fines and/or imprisonment, to weaken technical protection measures used to inhibit copyright infringement or to remove or alter electronic rights management information on copyrighted works.
