Ukraine enacted a new law on May 27, 2002 to permit the extension of patents for medical products or products for the protection of animals or plants where commercialization of the invention was delayed by the need to obtain prior marketing approval. The term of the extension will be the duration of the period between filing the patent application and obtaining marketing approval, subject to a proviso that the maximum extension possible is five years.
