Guatemala has adopted new regulations relating to patent applications that may add to the complexity of filing in this jurisdiction. Notable among the new provisions are requirements that powers of attorney must be supralegalized, recorded with the Supreme Court and on file with the Patent Office within four months of filing the application and that, at filing, all units must be expressed in the metric system. Failure to comply with these provisions will result in automatic abandonment of the application. There is also the possibility of the Patent Office requiring the agent handling a case to deposit a bond of $1,000 to guarantee that the agent will perform in a proper manner.
