Kazakhstan - New Labeling Requirements

We have been advised that on August 31, 1999 the government issued the Resolution On Measures for Restricting the Import of Substandard Goods into the Territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan, thereby imposing labeling requirements on goods imported into and sold in Kazakhstan. Effective February 1, 2000, labels on all goods imported into Kazakhstan and, effective April 1, 2000, labels on all goods sold in Kazakhstan, with certain exceptions, must contain information in both the Kazakh and Russian languages concerning the name and country of origin of the goods, the name of the manufacturer, the date of production, the expiration date, directions for storage and usage and the nutritional value of the goods.

Although the Resolution does not mandate the use of trademarks in the Kazakh or Russian languages, clients may wish to consider registering their marks in these alternate forms in Kazakhstan.
