Jordan - Trademark Law Amended

The Trademark Law has been amended, with effect from December 1, 1999. We understand from local Jordanian sources that the principal changes effected under the amended Law include the following:

1) service marks may be registered;

2) the term of registration has been increased from 7 to 10 years, and registrations are renewable for additional 10-year periods;

3) trademark registrations will be cancelled automatically if renewal applications are not filed within 6 months from the due date;

4) the assignment provisions have been simplified and trademarks may now be assigned with or without goodwill;

5) the period of non-use that renders a registration vulnerable to cancellation has been increased from 2 years to 3 years following registration; and

6) penalties for infringement have been increased.
