European Union (EU) - Treaty of Amsterdam Comes into Effect The Treaty of Amsterdam came into effect on May 1, 1999. Although this is primarily concerned with political matters, including increasing the powers of the European Parliament, it does effect some modifications of the earlier treaties relating to economic matters. As a result of this some of the Articles with which we have become familiar in the Treaty Establishing the European Economic Community (the Treaty of Rome) have been renumbered. Thus it should be noted that the two articles most commonly confronted in free flow of goods cases, Articles 30 and 36, have been renumbered as Articles 28 and 30 and that the two articles most commonly encountered in competition cases, Articles 85 and 86, have been renumbered as Articles 81 and 82.
