Cyprus - Joins European Patent Convention and PCT and Enacts New Patent Law

Cyprus has joined the European Patent Convention and the Patent Cooperation Treaty with effect from April 1, 1998. However, it is not possible to designate Cyprus in a PCT application. Cyprus can only be designated by designating the EPO.

In a related development, the House of Representatives has passed a new patent law which will end the current system of registration of British patents. The law is said to comply with the EU's standards for countries seeking membership in the EU, as Cyprus is currently doing.
