On March 19, 1997, the WIPO's Coordinating Committee elected Mr. Kamil Idris of the Sudan to succeed Dr. Arpad Bogsch as Director General when his term expires at the end of 1997. Mr. Idris is currently a Deputy Director General of the WIPO.
