Mexico - Increases Penalties for Copyright Infringement

By a new law published on December 24, 1996, Mexico has increased the penalties for violators of copyrights for commercial purposes up to 15,000 times the daily minimum wage in Mexico City. It has also increased the possible jail term for serious copyright violations to a period of from 6 months' to 6 years' imprisonment. The law has been enacted to comply with Mexico's obligations under NAFTA which requires "adequate and effective enforcement for intellectual property rights". Previous penalties were considered by many to be insufficient to comply with this requirement.
