International Classification of Goods and Services Amended

The International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks, established under the Nice Agreement in 1957, a classification system that is binding on 50 member states and followed by over 130 trademark offices throughout the world, has recently been updated pursuant to a meeting of the Committee of Experts. The seventh edition of the Classification entered into effect on January 1, 1997, and includes the following notable changes reclassifying the following goods and services into new International Classes:

Clients whose trademarks are used in relation to the above goods and/or services are advised to review the existing coverage for their marks to ensure that appropriate protection has been obtained and that their marks are being maintained under surveillance in accordance with the recent changes in classification, if they are entered in a Watch Service.
