In our April 1995 Newsletter (N.S. 185), we indicated that Costa Rica was accepting "black box" applications for protection of pharmaceutical products. We have now been advised that this is incorrect. Costa Rica grants patents for pharmaceutical products for a maximum duration of one year and takes the view that for the time being, this suffices to meet its obligations under TRIPS.
