Norway - Trademark Act Amended

On December 22, 1995, Norway enacted amendments to its Trademark Act, with effect from April 1, 1996, that, according to our sources, include the following principal changes:

1) previously applications were published for opposition and then granted registration. Under the amended Act, applications will be registered and then published for opposition;

2) the standards for establishing that marks are well-known have been relaxed;

3) appropriate provisions have been enacted to implement the Madrid Protocol system in Norway;

4) the term for requesting that an abandoned application be reinstated has been reduced from 4 months to 2 months.
