A number of countries in central Europe have made agreements with the European Patent Office (EPO) whereby patents granted by the EPO may be extended to them as long as the applicant has indicated that such an extension was contemplated at the time of filing the European patent application. On February 1, 1996, Albania joined Slovenia, Latvia and Lithuania as a country where protection could be secured in this way.
