Japan - Amendments to Trademark Law

The following amendments to the Japanese Trademark Law were promulgated on December 14, 1994 and went into effect on July 1, 1995 with respect to applications filed on or after this date:

1) trademarks containing a geographical indication identifying wines or spirits, which do not originate from the place indicated, will be subject to rejection or cancellation;

2) trademarks containing armorial bearings, hallmarks and/or other emblems of Paris Convention countries or World Trade Organization member countries will be subject to rejection or cancellation.
