Trinidad & Tobago - Amendment of Trademark Law and Rules

The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has amended its Trademark Law and Rules and the principal changes are set out below.

1) Provision for the registration of service marks has been introduced.

2) The International Classification of Goods and Services has been adopted, replacing the old British classification system (i.e. Schedule III).

3) Trademark applications will no longer be published for opposition purposes in the Trinidad & Tobago Gazette on an irregular basis; they will now be advertised in a daily newspaper (or other periodical circulating in Trinidad & Tobago) until the Government publishes an official Trade Marks Journal. This new procedure is expected to speed the publication process and clear the backlog of some four thousand applications now awaiting advertisement.
