We reported in our Information Letter N.S. 182 that a new Trademarks Act was published on January 5, 1994, but that the Act would not enter into effect until implementing regulations were completed and published. Since our sources advise that numerous objections against various provisions of the Act were raised during its consideration by Parliament, we reserved comment on the contents of the new Act until its form and effective date became more certain. Our sources have confirmed that the new Act is still being carefully reconsidered and is not expected to enter into force in the near future. We are continuing to monitor the situation closely and will keep our clients advised.
