Turkmenistan - Revalidation of Former USSR Trademark Registrations and Enactment of New Patent and Trademark Law

It has been reported to us that Turkmenistan is now accepting trademark applications and applications to revalidate former USSR trademark registrations which were in effect prior to October 1, 1993. The term within which revalidation applications must be filed will expire on:

December 31, 1995.

The issue of whether former USSR trademark applications may be eligible for revalidation has not yet been decided.

We have also been informed that an Industrial Property Law, which addresses patents, industrial designs, trademarks and service marks, entered into effect in Turkmenistan on October 1, 1993. We shall provide our clients with a summary of the new law's provisions, together with our comments, when we obtain a translation of the law.

Editor's Note: See our further report in our November 1995 Newsletter.
