Taiwan - Adoption of International Classification of Goods and Services

The Enforcement Rules of the Trademark Law in Taiwan, referred to in our Information Letter N.S. 182, entered into effect on July 17, 1994, thereby replacing the previous local classification system with the International Classification of Goods and Services. We have been advised that only applications filed on or after July 17, 1994 will be governed by the International Classification of Goods and Services and that applications filed prior to this date will not be reclassified but will be governed by the previous local classification system. Furthermore, existing trademark registrations will not be re-classified upon renewal in accordance with the International Classification system.
